The Kanzas company provides independent valuation of harvested timber and lumber held as inventory in Ukraine — roundwood, sawn timber and wood products at the yards and warehouses of the country's wood-processing sector. One point of terminology first, since it matters for what you order: this service covers felled, harvested timber as a commodity. Standing timber — trees before harvest — is a perennial planting, a biological asset with its own valuation logic (see biological asset valuation).
Harvested timber is a typical subject of working-capital collateral in Ukraine: lenders finance wood-processing and forestry-related enterprises against stocks of roundwood and sawn timber, and an independent opinion of market value — reflecting species, grade and volume — is what puts the collateral file on solid ground.
Timber and wood products we value
- roundwood (saw logs) of coniferous and hardwood species;
- sawn timber: boards, beams and blanks;
- veneer, plywood stock and technological chips;
- fuelwood and wood-processing residues;
- commercial lots at warehouses, exchanges and storage sites.
When international clients need a timber valuation
- Working-capital collateral — timber stocks pledged to banks and trade finance providers financing Ukrainian wood-processing businesses;
- Purchase and sale of commercial lots, including export transactions;
- IFRS reporting — inventory measurement of timber stocks for group accounts and audit;
- Corporate purposes — contribution to charter capital, insurance of lots, shortage disputes and enforcement proceedings in Ukraine.
What drives the value of a timber lot
- species — coniferous or hardwood — and its commercial grade of use;
- grade, quality class and intended purpose: saw logs, pulpwood, packaging timber;
- moisture state: green, air-dried or kiln-dried;
- assortment dimensions and lot volume in cubic meters;
- storage conditions and current market prices.
Methodology
Harvested timber is valued as inventory primarily under the sales comparison approach of the Ukrainian national standards, consistent with the International Valuation Standards (IVS): the value is built from market prices for the relevant species, grade and assortment — the price per cubic meter — adjusted for volume and moisture. The cost approach plays a supporting role for certain processed products.
Identifying the lot: inspection and documents
A physical inspection is mandatory under Ukrainian valuation law: the valuer identifies the lot at the place of storage and reconciles the volume and assortment. The visit is arranged with the site operator — the client's presence in Ukraine is not required.
Typical document set:
- documents on the origin of the timber and title to the lot;
- records by species, grade and volume;
- grading or quality documents, where available;
- book value data for the inventory.
Send the lot parameters and the purpose of the valuation to [email protected] — we will quote a fixed fee and timeline. Our reports on goods in turnover are built to withstand review by banks and auditors, on the strength of more than 20 years of practice.
Questions and answers
How much does a timber valuation in Ukraine cost? The fee and timeline are quoted once you send the lot data — species, grade, volume in cubic meters, place of storage — and the purpose of the valuation. Scope and a fixed price are agreed before signing.
Do you grade timber or assess its quality? No. Grading and quality assessment of timber are the domain of specialist graders and inspection services. We determine the market value of the lot on the basis of the species, grade, moisture and volume data provided — those parameters drive the market adjustments to the price per cubic meter.
What is the difference between valuing harvested timber and standing timber? Harvested timber is inventory: its value is derived from market prices for the assortments. Standing timber before felling is a perennial planting — a biological asset — measured at fair value with the future timber yield in view. That is a separate engagement under our biological asset valuation service.
