The excavator is one of the most traded machines on the construction equipment market, and most common models have an active secondary market in Ukraine. That makes comparables easier to find — and raises the bar for precision: two outwardly identical machines can differ in value substantially because of operating hours and the condition of the hydraulic system. The Kanzas company appraises excavators of all types — crawler and wheeled, full-slew and mini excavators (mini diggers), and backhoe loaders — individually or as part of an equipment fleet.

Why excavators are favored collateral

Among construction machinery, excavators of common makes are one of the most liquid positions: the active used market lets a valuer support the value reliably and quickly, which is why banks and leasing companies in Ukraine routinely commission their separate appraisal within collateral and lease packages. For international lenders and lessors this liquidity matters directly — it narrows the gap between market value and the price achievable in an accelerated sale, and we can determine both when the engagement requires it.

Value drivers of an excavator

The class anchors are operating weight and bucket capacity — comparables are selected from them. Value is then adjusted for actual condition:

  • operating hours (motor-hours) and year of manufacture;
  • condition of the hydraulic system — pumps, cylinders, high-pressure hoses: the most expensive and most wear-prone system of the machine;
  • condition of the undercarriage — tracks, rollers and sprockets on crawler machines, tyres and axles on wheeled ones;
  • make and origin: machines from leading international manufacturers versus budget or refurbished units differ in price substantially;
  • attachments and service history.

Valuation approaches

The market (sales comparison) approach is the primary one for common excavator types, supported by the active secondary market: the machine is benchmarked against comparables by operating weight, hours, configuration and condition. The cost approach applies to rare, new or specialized machines with few comparables — value is built from reproduction or replacement cost less physical, functional and economic depreciation. The income approach is used in limited cases, when the excavator earns income within a business, typically inside the valuation of an integral property complex. Reports are prepared under Ukrainian statutory standards consistent with the International Valuation Standards (IVS) and can be issued in English for foreign banks, auditors and courts.

Inspection arrangements and documents

Physical inspection and identification of the machine is a mandatory stage under Ukrainian valuation law. The valuer checks actual operating hours, tests the hydraulics, and examines the undercarriage and attachments. For international clients we arrange the inspection at the machine's location in Ukraine and coordinate access with the operator. For the engagement we will need the machine's technical passport, operating-hours data and, where available, the maintenance history; for wheeled excavators — the registration certificate.

Questions and answers

Can an excavator be appraised without registration documents? Yes. Crawler excavators in Ukraine are generally not registered as vehicles — they are identified by the machine passport and the serial numbers of the main assemblies during the inspection, so the absence of registration does not prevent the appraisal.

How much does the condition of the hydraulics affect the value? More than any other single system: hydraulic pumps and cylinders are the most expensive wear components of an excavator, so their actual condition is tested during the inspection and reflected in the adjustments explicitly.

What does an excavator appraisal cost and how fast can it be done? We quote a fixed fee and timeline after receiving the machine's specifications — type, make, year, operating hours — and the purpose of the valuation. For liquid, common models the engagement is typically quick, since comparables are readily available.
